James F. Day

James F. Day, 75, of Meadville, died Monday, February 5, 1996, at Meadville Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born December 10, 1920, at Cobbleskill, NY, a son of the late Emmons and Alice McCarty Day.  He married the former Janet Stewart in 1947.

He retired in 1986 as a Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Allegheny after 31 years.  He received his BA degree from Colgate University in 1942 and then served as a B-17 pilot during World War II with the US Army Air Corps.  He retired as a Major in the US Air Force Reserves after 20 years service.  He was an assistant in Philosophy at Yale University in 1948-49 and obtained a BD degree from Yale University School of Divinity in 1949; he was ordained in the United Methodist Church.

He was assistant minister at First Congregational Church, Stamford, CT in 1946-47 and pastored the West Side Hill Methodist Church, Waterbury, CT from 1949-51; he joined the faculty of St. Lawrence University in 1951 as an assistant Professor of Philosophy and director of religious activities.  He came to Allegheny College in 1955, serving there until his retirement.

He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Yale in 1958.  He was a member of the American Philosophical Society and a volunteer at Meadville Public Library with the READ Program.   He was also a member of the Western PA Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Stewart J. Day of Mineota, MN, Jonathan R. Day of Port Allegheny, Christopher A. Day of Philadelphia and Stephen D. Day of Atlanta; one brother, Eugene Day of Durham, NC; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, JoAnn Beebe.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
