James F. Simmons, 89, formerly of Saegertown and Randolph St., Meadville, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Meadville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
He was born November 22, 1924 in Dubois, a son of Bernard and Mary Esther Ross Simmons. He married Marian W. Woodring in October 1952 and she preceded him in death June 6, 2012.
Jim was a graduate of Meadville High School and was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He was employed by Crawford County as a deputy sheriff for 2 years before beginning work in the county assessment office for one year and then was named chief assessor, a position he held for 10 years. He subsequently was elected Crawford County prothonotary and held that office for 16 years until his retirement. He additionally worked at the former Sunbeam Corp.
Jim was a life member and former chief and treasurer of the West Mead 2 Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis Simmons and Thomas Simmons, both of Meadville; six grandchildren, Kristopher, Jaclyn, Ryan, Brandon, Dominic, and Devyn; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Phillips of Melbourne Beach, FL.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.
A private graveside service will be held at St. Brigid Cemetery with Fr. Johnathan P. Schmolt, Pastor of St. Brigid Church, officiating.
