James F. Surala

James F. Surala, 93, of Hartstown, died Monday, June 29, 2015 at Rolling Fields Nursing Home.

He was born September 27, 1921 in Cleveland, OH a son of Frank and Anna Vojvodik Surala.  He married Lois Maurer Grafton July 19, 1970 and she survives.

He was a graduate of East Tech High School in Cleveland and Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering.  He was also a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps in Europe and Africa and was the recipient of 6 Bronze Stars.

He as a chemical engineer for East Ohio Gas Co. in Cleveland for many years and subsequently worked as a cattle farmer in Hartstown, the Tool Room at Talon Inc. and in the bus garage for Conneaut Lake Schools.

Survivors, in addition to his wife Lois of 44 years, include: two daughters, Susan Rameas and her husband Dr. Samuel of Syracuse, NY and Amy Kantz of Hartstown; three step-children, Gail Allen and her husband David of Hartstown, Donald Grafton and his wife Diane of Hartstown and Laura Fries and her husband Joseph of Hartstown; a sister, Ann Grafton of Seven Hills, OH; fifteen grandchildren, Shannon Thurber, Lois Morris, Jamie Fries, Britta Grafton, Cass Grafton, Jeremy Allen, Melissa Allen, Kaylee Allen, Adam Nichols, Amber Nichols, Austin Nichols, Caitlin Rameas, Natalie Rameas, Lindsey Kantz and Megan Kantz; thirteen great grandchildren, Marissa Morris, Lane Morris, Connor Fries, Kyler Nichols, Calli Nichols, Natalie Austin, Zachary Austin, Ava Austin, Shane Thurber, Seth Thurber, Chipper Thurber, Scott Thurber and Bryce Desrochers; two nieces, Dorothy Zenobi and Beverly Grafton and a nephew, Kenneth Grafton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Dvorak.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
