Jane S. Evans

June 7, 1934 — October 9, 2008

Jane Shaper Evans, 74 of Waynesburg PA, died Thursday October 9, 2008 in Southwestern Regional Hospital with her husband Philip by her side.

She was born in Erie PA June 7, 1934, a daughter of Urban and Louise Echnoz Shaper.  She married Philip Evans August 22, 1958 and he survives.

Mrs. Evans graduated from Meadville High School in 1952 where she was an accomplished musician being a member of the orchestra and marching band.  She graduated from Edinboro State Teachers College in 1957 with a degree in elementary education and began a career in teaching.  In 1990 she completed her master’s degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  She taught elementary education and remedial reading over a 30-year career.  Her teaching career included service at Jackson elementary in the Bellevue school district, followed by service at various elementary schools of Keystone Oaks school district.  Her last teaching service was as a remedial reading teacher in the Central Cambria school district, in addition to Holy Name.

She was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan attending Steelers games for over 30-years. Her social and community activities included women’s club, ambulance association, and hospital volunteer.

Surviving are her husband Philip of Waynesburg, with whom she celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary August 22, 2008; a son Philip Larry Evans; and two grandsons Philip and David Evans of Charleston WV.

Friends and family will be received Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.  Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Saint Hippolyte Roman Catholic Church in Frenchtown with Fr. Dennis Veltri, celebrant.

Burial will be in St. Hippolyte Cemetery.
