Miss Jean Frey, 91, for almost 50 years a teacher in the public schools of Meadville and Youngstown, OH, died Tuesday morning, February 21, 1961, at the Flickinger Convalescent Home in Meadville.
She had been ill only a short time. Her eyesight had been seriously impaired in recent years, but her mind was keen and clear and she had kept contact with many friends until only recently.
For the past five years, Miss Frey had resided with a niece, Mrs. L. C. DeVore of Erie. Before that, she resided in Meadville with her sister, Miss Leila Frey, also a retired teacher, now deceased.
Miss Frey's teaching career was mostly at South High School in Youngstown - from 1911 to 1939. There, she was dean of girls and chairman of the department of social science. When she observed her 80th birthday in 1949, scores of cards and gifts were received from former pupils in Youngstown.
Miss Frey was graduated from Allegheny College, where she was affiliated with Kappa Kappa Gamma social sorority, in 1895. However, she had done some teaching before her graduation, beginning in 1891. After earning her arts degree she taught in Meadville before going to Youngstown. In addition to teaching, she was in demand as a public speaker and was active in civic affairs.
In 1953, she was honored by Alpha Gamma Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, as one of Crawford County's "Pioneer Women." Kappa Kappa Gamma also had honored her, and in 1955 the active chapter presented her with a sorority pin, to replace one she had lost.
Miss Frey was born in Meadville, March 30, 1869, the daughter of Rueben C. and Elizabeth Craig Frey.
She was a member of the Stone Methodist Church.
In one early period, she wrote data which was used on the back of stereopticon views distributed by the Keystone View Co.
Miss Frey is survived by a sister, Mrs. R. L. (Rebekah) Clough of El Cerrito, CA; a nephew, William H. Clough of Meadville; three nieces, Mrs. DeVore, Mrs. James Pence of El Cerrito, CA and Mrs. D. B. Cruikshank of Colorado Springs, CO.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
