Miss Jessie A. McGill, 85, died Thursday afternoon at her home in Meadville after a long illness.
A teacher of harmony and the theory of music at the old Pennsylvania College of Music here, she was born September 27, 1864, at Saegertown and was the daughter of William R. and Caroline Harkins McGill. She attended Saegertown public schools, was graduated from Oberlin (Ohio) Conservatory of Music and taught music at Edinboro State Teachers College for several years. She then went to Germany, where she studied music and German, and was graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Music at Leipzig in 1895.
For the next three and a half years, Miss McGill was on the staff of Christian College at Columbia, MO, then operated a music studio at Oil City where she taught for several years.
Moving to Meadville in 1910, she taught at the Pennsylvania College of Music and after retiring, taught private students until a few years ago at her Randolph Street home.
She was a member of Harmonsburg Presbyterian Church, Mu Phi Epsilon musical sorority and was a charter member of the Meadville Women's Club. Miss McGill helped to organize the local Chi Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon.
An only daughter, she had eight brothers. These five brothers survive: Edward E. of Orlando, FL, John M. and Audley R., both of Oil City, Neil W. of Cleveland and Earl of Meadville. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Saegertown Cemetery.
