Joan S. Reed

Joan S. Reed, 85 of Sandy Lake, passed away on February 26, 2021 at St. Paul Homes in Greenville. Joan was born in Clintonville on July 1, 1935 to the late Clair and Rachel (Hindman) Shoffner. She was a graduate of Sandy Lake High School and was a dedicated homemaker for her husband and children. She was a very loving mother and her family was her focus and passion. She was always willing to help her children and watch her grandchildren. She enjoyed many trips to Myrtle Beach and other destinations with her family and always attended her grandchildren’s sporting events. Joan was a longtime member of the Sandy Lake Wesleyan Church, rejoicing in her personal relationship with Jesus. She was very involved over her years in the youth group, vacation Bible school, and church picnics. She was a large supporter of mission trips and had the opportunity to go to Haiti twice for mission work and to Georgia to work at a children's home. She hosted many prayer and bible study groups and being a member of the phase-10 group. Joan loved sports, she was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan and was known to be very competitive. She played club volleyball at Oakview for many years as well as church softball, backyard sport competitions, and board games. She was a history buff, enjoying Abraham Lincoln and Civil War History. She and Norman enjoyed their 35th anniversary present from her children, a trip to Williamsburg, VA to see where our Country’s forefathers stayed. She also enjoyed gardening with her husband and loved her flowers. Joan had a way of making everyone in her family feel special, especially her grandchildren who she wrote personalized poems for each one. She was a very talented writer and wrote many poems on life, faith, and nature. Joan married her beloved husband, Norman Powers Reed on May 28, 1953, he preceded her in death on May 19, 2010. Joan is survived by her children Patricia Jean Reed-Weaver and husband Robert of Pounding Mill, VA, Kenneth Powers Reed and wife Onnalea of Stoneboro, and Richard Brian Reed and wife Tracey of Sandy Lake; grandchildren, Linde Reed, Jennifer Reed-Alexander (Andy), Christofer Reed, Kiersten Reed-Bird (Chris), Kimberlee Weaver-Brown (Christian Paul “CP”), Natalie Weaver, Stephanie Reed-Payne (Brian), Carolyn Weaver, Eric Weaver, and Taylor Reed; great-grandchildren, Reed and Abby Anniss, Kady, James, and Anna Alexander, and Elsa and Emmett Brown; sisters Diana Wilshire and Shirley Martz; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Joan was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Johnson. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Rose and Black Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. 99 Franklin Street, Stoneboro, where family and friends are welcome from 1-3 pm on Tuesday, March 2, 2021.
