John H. Bailey, II, M.D., 86 of 393 Hamilton Ave., Meadville, and a summer resident of Conneaut Lake died Saturday, February 22, 2002 at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community.
He was born in Philadelphia Aug. 11, 1916, a son of the late John H. and Martha MacConnell Bailey, Sr. He married Elizabeth J. (Betty) Henderson May 3, 1944 and she survives.
He was a 1934 graduate of Meadville High School, a 1938 graduate of Allegheny College, and a 1943 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia. He served his medical internship at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA, and a medical residency for 3 years at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. He operated his medical practice in Meadville for 50 years before retiring, with his son joining him in practice in 1984.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Captain in the U. S. Army Air Corps, as Squadron Surgeon, and was stationed in Michigan, Florida, Georgia, and California.
He was a 50-year member and past president of the Crawford County Medical Society, a member of the Penna. Medical Society, and the American Medical Assn. He was instrumental in organizing Hospice of Crawford County, was an organizing member of the Local Society of Friends, a founding member of Meadville People for Peace, a founding member of the Conneaut Lake-French Creek Valley Conservancy, and a founding member and past president of the Crawford Co. Mental Health Society, now known as Mental Health-Mental Retardation. He served for many years on the Board of Directors of Warren State Hospital, Warren, PA and was a past president of the Medical-Dental Staff of both the former Spencer Hospital and Meadville City Hospital. He was also a member of the Greendale Cemetery Assn. Board of Directors.
His life was devoted to his beloved family, his patients, and his medical practice. His interests and hobbies included, fishing, boating, gardening, wood-working, model airplane flying, bee keeping, raising chickens and homing pigeons. He was also an instrument rated private pilot.
He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Meadville and the Pittsburgh Friends Meeting, Meadville Round Table, Iroquois Boating & Fishing Club of Conneaut Lake, and the Meadville Country Club.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 58 years, include 3 daughters, Jill Jorden and her husband William, Sara Babcock and her husband Norman, and Robin Bailey and her husband Ted Weber, and 1 son, John H. Bailey, III, and his wife Christine, all of Meadville; 12 grandchildren, Heather Jorden Bunyard and her husband Britt, W. Stoney Jorden, Melissa Jorden, Matthew Jorden, Lori Babcock, Holly Babcock, Ben Babcock, Sarah Bailey, Leslie Bailey, John Bailey, IV, Tate Weber, and Bob Weber; l great-grand daughter, Rachel Bunyard; 1 sister, Martha Bailey of San Antonio, TX; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 1 sister, Evelyn Watson and 2 brothers, Ralph and Robert Bailey.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.
A memorial service will be held at the Meadville Unitarian Church on a date in April to be announced.
Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery.
