John Robert (John Bob) Cannon, 81, of Conneaut Lake, died Wednesday, October 5, 2005 at Meadville Medical Center.
He was born January 1, 1924, in Mountaindale, a son of J. S. and Sara McCartney Cannon. He married Julia Alice (Judy) Junk, R. N., May 8, 1948. She preceded him in death May 4, 1997, after 49 years of marriage.
The family moved from Pittsburgh to Conneaut Lake in August of 1927. He graduated from Conneaut Lake High School in 1941, and then attended gunsmith school and Talon Tool and Die apprenticeship.
He served with the 2nd and 5th US Marine divisions during World War II in the Pacific.
John Bob worked at Talon as a group leader tool and die maker for 36 years and retired in 1987. He was also a gunsmith and loved to hunt, fish and collect Indian artifacts.
He was an active member and life member of Linesville Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 7842 and the Cooties, and a member of Linesville American Legion Post 462, Conneaut Lake American Legion Post 587, Conneaut Lake-Linesville Knights of Columbus, Conneaut Lake Park Fire Hall and Conneaut Lake Sportsman Club. At one time, he was treasurer in four different organizations with his wife, Judy's, help.
In 1981, Conneaut Lake Sportsman Club voted him Sportsman of the Year. In 1985, Talon gave him the Presidents Award for Productivity.
His pet project was to keep Linesville VFW Post 7842 alive and prosperous. In earlier days it was a family deal, with help from his daughters and wife. In 2004, VFW Post awarded him the a plaque for 50 years an an officer and nearly 30 years as treasurer.
He was also Conneaut Lake Borough wage tax collector for 16 years until severe sickness caused him to retire.
He is survived by two daughters, Roberta (Bobbi) Loadman (Ronald) of Pittsburgh and Laura (Lori) Hoogstad (Chuck) of Conneaut Lake; four grandchildren, Rae Ann Davis, Dawnelle Luppe, Joe Hoogstad (Kristi) and Samantha Loadman and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Cannon, R.N.
Services were held at Waid-Coleman Funeral Home.
Interment was in Our Lady Queen of the Americas Cemetery.
