The Rev. John D. Van Horn, 92, a resident of the United Methodist Hospital for the past year, died there Tuesday, April 13, 1982, following an extended illness.
He was born at Laurelville May 19, 1989, a son of Henry F. and Matilda Tannehill Van Horne. He married Berdeen Braymer June 15, 1916.
The Rev. Van Horn served for nearly 50 years in United Methodist pastorates in and around Pittsburgh, retiring in 1963. He was district superintendent of the Allegheny District from 1940-46.
A 1913 graduate of Allegheny College and a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, he also graduated from Boston University School of Theology.
He was a World War I veteran, serving as chaplain with the 11th Infantry, 5th Division, for two years in France. In 1960, the Rev. Van Horn served as state chaplain for Order of the Purple Heart.
He served for 25 years as a trustee of Allegheny College and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Mt. Union College.
The Rev. Horn was a member of St. James Lodge 457 of Beaver and American Legion Post 389 of Beaver.
Survivors include a son, John F. Van Horn of Red Hook, NY; a brother, Eugene H. of Monroeville and two grandchildren.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Scottdale Cemetery, Scottdale.
