John W. Fox, 69, veteran Meadville area educational administration, died Friday at City Hospital.
Fox, who held teaching and supervisory positions in education for over 42 years, was to retire at the end of this school year.
He was supervising principle of West Mead School from 1946 until formation of the union school district last year. He continued as principle of West Mead School since then, also serving as consultant on area school cafeteria and transportation matters. He resided on Park Avenue Extension.
The Meadville Branch, PA State Education Assn., honored the veteran educator March 6 at the groups annual banquet.
Survivors include his widow, Elda S. Fox and two sons, John W. Fox, Jr. of Ludlow and Daniel A. Fox of Meadville.
Fox was born June 4, 1886, in England. His parents, the late Daniel O. and Ellen Warner Fox, were on their way to a missionary assignment in India at the time. They soon continued with trip with their new son, who lived in India until he was 19 years old.
Returning to this county, young Fox entered Allegheny College where he graduated in 1910. While attending Allegheny, he was a member of Du-zer-due, a dramatic society from which grew the Allegheny Playshop.
He received his master's degree at the University of Pittsburgh in 1935 and also studied education in summer sessions at PA State University, Cornell and Harvard universities.
Following his graduation from Allegheny, he became principle of Bruin High School. During the following years, he served in these positions: principle at Scio, NY High School, principle of Girard High School, elementary principle at McKeesport; a foreman with US Steel Corp at Clarion during World War I, science teacher at Edgewood Park High School; supervising principle of Hamilton School District at Ludlow, a post he held from 1923 to 1943.
Between 1943 and 1946, he was a member of the Meadville High School science department.
He planned to put his energies at his favorite hobby, gardening, upon retirement this June.
He was a member of the Meadville Branch, PSEA, attended Stone Methodist Church and was very active in Parent-Teacher group activities.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
