John Gordon Phelps

John Gordon Phelps, 89, of Phelps Rd., Meadville died Wednesday, June 1, 2011 the Meadville Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Meadville January 11, 1922, a son of Ralph and Edythe Amsbaugh Phelps.  He married Marian L. Hulsizer February 22, 1944 and she survives.

He retired in 1983 from American Viscose Corp. after 43 years of service.  He was a veteran of World War II serving with the US Army Air Corps in Okinawa.  He was a member of St. Marks United Church of Christ, Harm Jan Huidekoper VFW Post #2006 and a charter member of its Color Guard.  He was an avid hunter, fisherman, enjoyed wine making and ran the family farm for many years.

Survivors, in addition to his loving wife Marian of 67 years, include four children, Thomas L. Phelps and his wife Shirley of Meadville, Cynthia L. Phelps of Meadville, Martha A. Phelps and her husband Bill Halstead of Allentown and Debbie Lowman and her husband Dan of Bluffton, SC; four grandchildren, Kelly Phelps, Melissa Woodworth, Debbie Ann Phelps and Jonathon Phelps; five great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Imogene Taylor, Gladys Curran and Dorothy Emig.

Calling hours are today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from 10-11 a.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.

The funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Russell D. Hines, Pastor of St. Marks United Church of Christ, officiating.

Interment with military honors provided by Harm Jan Huidekoper VFW Post #2006 will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
