John J. Williams

John J. Williams, 90, of State College, formerly of Meadville, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at The Fairways at Brookline Village, State College.

Born October 15, 1911 in Meadville, he was the son of the late John L. and Emma Maloney Williams.  On June 19, 1937, he married Harriette Leberman, who died on March 19, 2002.

He was a 1932 graduate of Allegheny College and a member of Beta Kappa Fraternity, now Theta Chi. He was employed by Talon for 40 years, retiring in 1971, after serving as a plant manager in New Haven, CT and, for many years, as Vice President of Operations in Meadville.  He was a member of the Talon Management Club; the Meadville Management Club; the National Association of Manufacturers; the American Management Association and National Management Association.  He was the recipient of the 1969 National Management Association “Silver Knight of Management” award and of the 1971 National Management Association “Leadership” award from the Talon Management Club.  He was a registered Professional Engineer.

He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Meadville where he was a former Elder.   He attended Mt. Nittany United Methodist Church in State College.

In Meadville, he was a former member of the Meadville Area School Board; former member and chairman of the Advisory Board of the Crawford County Area Vo-Tech School; a United Way volunteer; former director of the First National Bank; member of the Meadville Area Chamber of Commerce; a member of the Board of Corporators of the Meadville Medical Center; a member of the Iroquois Boating and Fishing Club of Conneaut Lake and the Meadville Country Club.  He was an avid sportsman who loved fishing, hunting and golfing.

He is survived by a daughter, Lynne E. Franklin of Palm Harbor, FL; a son, Jack D. Williams of State College; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, two sisters, Frances Virtue and Claire Williams, and a brother, Elwood Williams, predeceased him.

Visitation for family, friends and Brookline Village employees will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 20, at the Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton Street, State College.  A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, at the Windsong Dining Room at Brookline Village, 1930 Cliffside Drive, State College with the Reverend Carl E. Hill officiating.  A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 22, at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home 581 Chestnut St. Meadville with the Reverend Steven Aschmann, pastor of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, officiating.     Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meadville Medical Center Foundation, 1035 Grove Street, or to Allegheny College, Gift Planning, 520 N. Main Street, Meadville, PA  16335.
