John Joseph Werle, 93, a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community, Meadville, died there Sunday, March 27, 2005 following a brief illness.
He was born in Meadville, September 17, 1911, a son of the late Edward J.H. and Marion Gurnsey Werle. He married Katherine Louise (Peggy) Starr April 11, 1942 and she preceded him in death March 16, 2004.
He was a 1928 graduate of Meadville High School, 1932 graduate of Allegheny College, and 1933 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business. He was employed by Talon from 1933 to 1976 in several sales and marketing positions in New York, Philadelphia, and Meadville. He retired in 1976 as assistant sales administrator.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
He was a member of Round Table, the Meadville Country Club, Crawford County Historical Society, and Meadville Elks Lodge #219. He was a former vice president and director of the former Crawford Store; former chairman and president of the board of managers of Greendale Cemetery Assoc., former alumni advisor to the Allegheny College chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity; and a former Red Coat volunteer at the former City Hospital.
He was the recipient of the Merit Key by the national office of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity in 1978 and was honored by Allegheny College in 1987 with the Blue Award and in 1992 with the Alumni Medal for various alumni activities.
Survivors include a son, John Starr Werle and his wife Cathleen of Meadville; two grandsons, Justin Winn and Matthew Starr Werle, both of Meadville; two nieces, Sally Mullen of Canal Winchester, OH and Susan Werle of Erie; and one grandniece, Allyssa Noggle of Columbus, OH. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, James E. Werle.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.
A funeral service will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. William L. Brown, Associate Pastor of Stone United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.
