John L. Bates

John L. Bates, a partner in the Edward T. Bates Co. music store, died at his residence sometime late Wednesday of early Thursday morning, November 19, 1959.

A son of the late Alfred J. and Bertha S. Bates, he was born on February 20, 1902.  He was graduated from Meadville High School where he was prominent as an athlete, participating in basketball, football and track.  He was graduated from Allegheny College in the class of 1928.  He was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.

He entered the Edward T. Bates Co. upon graduation from college.  Upon the death of his father in 1933, he formed a partnership with his brother, Samuel P. Bates, to continue operation of the Chestnut Street music store.

On August 18, 1935, he was married to the former Myrna Smith.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by a son, William A. Bates, serving in Korea; three brothers, Samuel P., Dr. Richard L. and Arhtur L. Bates, II, all of Meadville.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ruth Bates Hart.

He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Elks, Iroquois and Eagles Clubs.

Service were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
