John L. Seber, 94, of Meadville and formerly of Guys Mills, died Monday, November 29, 2010 at Meadville Medical Center.
He was born in Franklin January 7, 1916, a son of Harry E. and Effie Boyer Seber. He married Opal R. Beck March 5, 1936.
John was a 1933 graduate of Oakland High School, Dempseytown and was the oldest surviving school alumni. He was employed for 26 years at Wentworth Auto Sales, Guys Mills as a mechanic and service manager. He subsequently worked at GTI, Saegertown for 5 years and National Teltronics for 7 years, retiring in 1979.
John was a member of the United Evangelical Free Church of Guys Mills where he formerly served as a trustee. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the former Meadville Gun Club where he was an expert marksman and shot competitively in the region for many years. He was a self taught gunsmith for over 40 years.
A journeyman tool maker, John was always "tinkering" and enjoyed building and fixing things for his family and friends. He attended the Guys Mills Senior Center for several years and was a motorcycle enthusiast, including his favorite BMW that he rode for 50 years.
Survivors, in addition to his loving wife Opal of 74 years, include 4 children, Harold Seber and his wife Kathy of Cambridge Springs, Marilyn Boyd and her husband David of Meadville, John Seber and his wife Janita of Erie, and Cheryl Weiderspahn and her husband Francis of Cochranton; a brother, Paul Ritchey of Groves, TX; 8 grandchildren, Harold Seber, Jr. and his wife Nancy, Judy Thorson and her husband Olaf, Gregory Boyd and his wife Aida, Jennifer MacKenzie and her husband Paul, Merideth Riddle and her husband Brad, Nathan Weiderspahn and his wife Barbara, Jason Seber and Jamey Owen and her husband Brad; 11 great-grandchildren, Melissa, Darryl, Elizabeth, Alexander, Gracia, Ruth, Lydia, Sarah, Molly, Jacoby and Tucker; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Allen Seber; 2 granddaughters, Adrianne Seber and Brenda Jean Boyd; a brother, Virgil Boyer; and 3 sisters, Lois Stevens, Mildred Foster and Mary Matteson.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.
The funeral service will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. David Coddington, Pastor of the United Evangelical Free Church of Guys Mills officiating.
Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Guys Mills.
