John O. Shields

April 15, 1942 — January 15, 1997

John O. Shields, Sr. 54, of Meadville, died unexpectedly Wednesday, January 15, 1997 in Daytona Beach, FL.

He was born April 15, 1942 in Sykesville, a son of Owen W. and Elizabeth (Enright) Shields.  He married Eileen Briggs November 24, 1962.  She survives.

He was a 1960 graduate of Erie Academy High School and a 1971 graduate of Edinboro University with a BS in Art Education.  He served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict from 1962-1968.  He was a former Scout Master for Troop 227 of Stone United Methodist Church and had been a member of the district scouting committee, member of the Order of the Arrow and the John Brown Heritage Assn.

He had been employed as a graphics specialist at Wesbury United Methodist Community for fourteen years.  He recently completed study in advanced video and multimedia development at the Kerr Adult Skills Center in Titusville.

He was a very active member of Stone United Methodist Church and served on local, district and conference committees of the Western PA Conference of the United Methodist Church.  He was a licensed Lay Speaker in the United Methodist Church and recently returned from a mission trip to Zaire, Africa.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his mother, Elizabeth Shields of Meadville; three sons, John O. Shields, Jr. of Meadville, James M. Shield of Linesville and Robert E. Shields, II of Meadville; two sisters, Mary Jasper of Birmingham, AL and Ruth Morgan of Wolfeboro, NH; one brother, William Shields of Meadville; five grandchildren and also nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Owen W. Shields and a brother, Robert E. Shields.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
