John S. Salak

John S. Salak, 93, of Meadville, passed away Thursday, July 15, 2021 at Embassy of Park Avenue.

He was born March 22, 1928 in Cowansville, PA, a son of John H. and Catherine Turek Salak.  He married Rose Stanley October 22, 1955 and she preceded him in death December 20, 2018.

John was a 1946 graduate of Kittanning High School and proudly served during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954.  He worked for Nationwide Insurance for 35 years including 3 years in Kittanning, 5 years in Meadville as district manager, and 27 years as owner and operator of the John S. Salak Agency.

John was a member of St. Brigid Church (now The Epiphany of The Lord Parish), The Knights of Columbus, and The Holy Name Society.  He was a member, past president and past treasurer of the Meadville Lions Club as well as past district governor.  John was also a member of Meadville Elks Lodge 219 and VFW Post 2006.  He was a former member of the Kittanning Jaycees and the Kon Yacht Kickers Square Dance Club.  He enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing bridge and bike riding and loved traveling with Rose to numerous places both domestically and internationally.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Wiggins (Leonard) of Belpre, OH; a son, Mark Salak (Kristen Miller) of Hyde Park, NY; longtime caregiver and friend, Karen Rodgers of Linesville; five grandchildren, Heather, Selena, and Corey Wiggins and Andrea Salak-Gerardi and Ivan Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers, William, Andrew, Frank, Joseph, and George Salak and four sisters, Rosemarie Swartzwelder, Jesse Paris, Martha Allard, and Stella Edmonds.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, July 22nd from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Chapel of St. Brigid Church, 383 Arch St., Meadville with a Lions Club service at 12:30 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Jeffrey Lucas as Celebrant.

Interment will be in St. Brigid Cemetery with military honors provided by VFW Post 2006.
