Joseph Fryer, 78, a resident of the Ida M. Cribbs Methodist Home, died at City Hospital, Friday morning.
Born in Bedlington, England, he began work in the coal mines in his youth and had completed more than 30 years of work in the Bedlington Colliery when he left for the United States in 1923. One of his prized possessions was a cane inscribed in his honor and presented by fellow miners at that time.
After coming to the US, he worked in coal mines in Butler County until he moved to Fredonia, NY, in 1937, where he engaged in farming for a short time. He returned to Butler County in 1945, and worked as an aid in Deshon General Hospital. He was again a resident of Fredonia before entering Cribbs Home.
He wife died in 1939. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ellen Haring of Lynn Haven, FL, Mrs. Dorothy Young of Pittsburgh and Alice of Fredonia; two sons, Charles and John, both of Fredonia.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Slippery Rock Cemetery.
