He was born in Pittsburgh, August 2, 1938, a son of Joseph Paul and Mary Josephine Plasmeyer Schorting.
Joe was a graduate of Meadville High School and attended Edinboro University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1959. Joe spent many years in the tool and die industry working for Leech Tool and Imperial Carbide. Previously, he had been employed at Star Bread Co. and the American Viscose.
Survivors include two daughters, LeeAnn Leech (Michael) of Meadville and Caroline Carradine of Girard, OH; three grandchildren, Emily Leech, Ryan Leech and Crystal Carradine; a sister, Mary Anne Hall (Murray) of Meadville; and Chad Richards of Los Angeles, CA who was like a son to Joe.
He was a member and past Exulted Ruler of Meadville Elks Lodge 219. Joe was also a member of VFW Post 2006 and West Mead 2 V.F.D.
In retirement, Joe enjoyed hiking the Appalachian Trail, golfing and traveling. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan. He also was a Civil War buff visiting many of the battle fields throughout his life.
Shortly after retirement, Joe was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. He received a lung transplant on October 5, 2003. Joe’s family expresses gratitude to the family of the 22-year-old female who in their loss was willing to donate this life saving organ. Joe took very good care of himself following a healthy lifestyle. He was a part of the 3% club. Approximately 3% of lung transplant recipients survive as long as he did.
