Josephine Bates Webb

June 23, 1867 — August 19, 1963

Mrs. Josephine Bates Webb, of Meadville, died early Monday morning, August 19, 1963, at Flickinger's Convalescent Home, where she had resided for the past year.  She was 96.

She is survived by a son, Arthur B. Webb of Meadville; four daughters, the Misses Mary and Helen Webb of Meadville, Mrs. Paul Campbell of Media and Mrs. Frank Hart of Ridgewood, NJ; four grandchildren, John Campbell, Mrs. Nicoll (Mary) Cooper, Mrs. Christopher (Helen) Shearouse, and Curtis Hart; and two great-grandchildren, Anne and Susan Campbell.

Mrs. Webb was born in Meadville, June 23, 1867, one of seven children of Prof. and Mrs. Samuel P. Bates.  She spent her entire life in Meadville, residing for all but a few years in the family homestead on Highland Avenue, built by her father in 1855.

On October 22, 1901, she was married to Curtis L. Webb, prominent Meadville attorney, who died in 1937.  She was a sister of Arthur L. Bates, member of Congress; Walter Irving Bates, editor and publisher of the Meadville Tribune; Alfred J. Bates, proprietor of the music store formerly located on Chestnut Street; Edward T. Bates; Mrs. Floyd R. (Florence) Stewart and Miss Gertrude Bates, all of whom predeceased her.  Her father was superintendent of schools and served as state historian immediately following the Civil War.

A graduate of Meadville High School in 1886, Mrs. Webb attended Allegheny College where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity.  Prominent in many community and civic activities, she was a member of First Baptist Church, Col. Crawford Chapter of the DAR, the Ladies Advisory Committee of Meadville City Hospital, the Woman's Literary Club, the Meadville Library, Art and Hostorical Assn., the Woman's Club and the Travelers Club.

Services were held with the Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
