Julia Z. Slater

Julia Z. Slater, 91 of Stoneboro, passed away in her home at 2:15 pm on Monday, January 22, 2018 surrounded by her family. She was born on January 4, 1927 to the late Frank and Esther Brown Zimmer. She attended Conneaut Lake Schools and then graduated from Sandy Lake High School in 1945. She worked in her early years as an accountant for Joy Manufacturing in Franklin. She later became a homemaker for her family and a self-made artist. Julia Belonged to the “Chicken Coop” artist club in Hadley and had served as President of the Mercer County China Painting Association. She was a very talented artist doing oil, ceramic, slate and china painting. Anything you could think to paint she would find a way. She was a long standing member of the Sandy Lake United Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Greenville Organ Club and played together with neighbors the piano, organ, and the accordion. She married her beloved husband, John C. “Slick” Slater, on August 29, 1952. He preceded her in death on January 2, 1997. Julia will be deeply missed by her two sons, Doug Slater of Sandy Lake and Clint Slater of Stoneboro, four grandchildren, Brandon (Alexis), Madison, OH, Colton, Mentor, OH, Aubrey, Orlando, FL, and Harrison Rondon (Danyell), Fort Lauderdale, FL. She also recently got to meet and hold her new great-granddaughter, Quinn Olivia Slater. She is further survived by her dear sister Esther (Henry) Schell of Sandy Lake. In addition to her husband and parents, Julia is preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Barnes and Ellen Elva Cauvel and two brothers James Zimmer and Duncan Zimmer. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Black Funeral Home, Stoneboro. Family and friends are invited to the Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church, 3461 Sandy Lake-New Lebanon Rd, Sandy Lake, on Saturday, January 27, from 10 AM until the time of the service at 12 PM with the Reverend Beth Creekpaum, Church Pastor, Officiating.
