Katherine (Peggy) Werle

Katherine (Peggy) Starr Werle, 89, of 436 Sunset Drive, Meadville, died Tuesday March 16, 2004, at Meadville Medical Center, after a brief illness.

She was born in Meadville Nov. 17, 1914, a daughter of Laurence B. & Maybelle Wolff Starr.  She married John J. Werle April 11, 1942, and he survives.

She was a 1932 graduate of Meadville High School, and a 1936 graduate of Allegheny College, with a BA in English. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.  She also was a graduate of Meadville Commercial College.

Prior to her marriage, she was employed as Secretary to Dr. John Richie Schultz, then Dean of Men at Allegheny College, who later became President of Allegheny

Her community activities included volunteering with the American Red Cross during World War II, serving on the Board of Directors of Meadville Hillside Home, a member of the former Meadville City Hospital Junior Auxiliary, and subsequently the Meadville Medical Center Auxiliary.

She especially enjoyed reading before her eyesight began to fail.

Survivors in addition to her husband of nearly 62 years, include 1 son, John Starr Werle and his wife Cathleen, 2 grandsons, Justin Winn Werle, and Matthew Starr Werle, all of Meadville, & 2 nieces and 1 great niece.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc. 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.

The funeral service will be Friday at 10:00 a.m. in the Barco Chapel of Grace Nursing Center at Wesbury United Methodist Community, 31 N. Park Ave., with the Rev.

Susan Davies Buell, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, officiating.

Following cremation, burial will be in Greendale Cemetery.
