Kenneth Gerald Burns, 80, of 15248 Limber Road, Meadville died Friday, September 22, 2006 at Meadville Medical Center after a short illness.
He was born January 4, 1926 in Meadville a son of Kenneth George and Althea Emmel Burns. He married Betty Jean Conrad October 19, 1946 and she survives.
He was a 1946 graduate of Meadville High School after serving with the US Navy aboard the escort ship USS Petrof Bay in the Pacific theater from December 1944 until the end of WW II. He was employed as a die sinker by Palmer Brothers which subsequently became Meadville Forging where he retired in 1990 after 37 years. He acted as shop steward for the Die Sinkers Union for several years. He was a member of the BPOE Elks Lodge #219, West Mead #2 Fire Hall, Meadville VFW Post #2006 and the United Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer. He also played guitar in The Old Timers Band visiting area nursing homes. In his spare time he enjoyed working in his basement workshop, hunting, fishing and reading in the evening.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Betty of 59 years, include: three children, daughter, Kathleen Shartle of Meadville, son, Michael and his wife Darlene Burns of Saegertown and daughter, Jacqueline Burns and her husband Chad Morrow of Asheboro, North Carolina, 12 grand children, 18 great-grand children, four sisters, Dorothy Telliho of Meadville, Jessie Stainbrook and her husband Wayne of Meadville, Donna Dillaman and her husband Bob of Conneautville, Pat Orris and her husband Edwin of Waterford, one, brother John Burns of Saegertown and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Larry G. Burns and a sister, Gene Burns-Perry.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville with an Elks service at 6 p.m. by Elks Lodge #219.
The funeral service will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Mary Kathryn Crom, officiating.
Burial with military honors by VFW Post 2006 will be in Greendale Cemetery. Serving as pall bearers will be Matthew Burns, Kristopher Perry, Daniel Kearns, Staff Sgt. Timothy Kearns, Brian Shartle and Christopher Lamont.
