Kenton W. Bertram, 94, of Saegertown, died Saturday, March 6, 1999 at Crawford County Care Center following a period of failing health.
He was born in Teepleville, March 23, 1904, a son of Frederick H. and Sarah Ellen (Eaton) Bertram. He married Carlette Hanks in 1929 (now deceased) and subsequently married Lois L. Knopp, December 21, 1957. She survives.
He graduated in 1922 from New Richmond High School and received his teaching certificate from Edinboro State Normal School in 1924. He then taught school for 13 years. From 1933-36 he attended Universal Chiropractic College in Pittsburgh. In 1945, he receieved his chiropractic degree from Metropolitan College of Cleveland. Continuing education courses led to his Drugless Therapy Licenses from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh. He earned his Naturopathic and Masters Degrees from Nashville Naturopathic College, Nashville, TN.
He was a founding member of Chiropractic Assoc. of Western PA and served for many years as its President. in 1948, he opened the Bertram Clinic in Saegertown which is now operated by his son, Dr. K. James Bertram, DC. At one time he also had offices in Titusville, Jamestown, NY, Meadville and Guys Mills.
At one time, he owned and managed a semi-professional baseball team under the name of Maple Lawn in Richmond Township. in 1949, he established Little League baseball in Saegertown and in 1960 became District Administrator of District #1 Little League of N/WPA. He established the Saegertown Area Recreation Assoc., Inc. and he donated 8 acres of land along French Creek to Hayfield Township for use as a Little and Senior League Baseball field.
He was a former Mayor of Saegertown. He helped organize the Saegertown Tulip Festival, Saegertown Garden Club and served as president of the Golden Age Club, now known as the Twenty-one Plus Club. He was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Meadville.
He was a member of Covenant Masonic Lodge #473, Cambridge Springs, Erie and New Castle Scottish Rite Bodies, N/W Commandry #25, Knights Templar, Meadville and Zem Zem Shrine Temple, Erie. He was a Trustee Emeritus Zem Zem Shrine Temple, member and past President Crawford Co. Shrine Club, member and past Secretary Crawford Co. Motor Patrol, charter member of Kismet Grotto and Knighted member of DeMolay Legion of Honor. He was a member of Titusville Elks Lodge, Crawford and Erie Co. State Police #30 and her was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 1974 for his work with children. He was also an organizing member of the Crawford County Fair Board in 1944.
He was also a published poet having written Rhymes of the Times.
Survivors in addition to his wife, include, two daughters, Dr. Sharlene Brown of Saegertown and Kenlo Ann Bertram of Meadville; a son, Dr. K. James Bertram (Susan) of Saegertown; two granddaughters, Kimberly Miller and Sarah M. Bertram; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Root and two brothers, Ralph and Frederick Bertram.
Services were held at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Venango Cemetery.
