Laverne "Vern" J. Hedglin

LaVerne “Vern” J. Hedglin, Jr., 81 of Stoneboro, passed away the evening of January 1, 2019 at Grove City Medical Center. Vern was born on February 26 ,1937 in Stoneboro to the late LaVerne J. Hedglin, Sr. and Mary Velda Clingerman Hedglin. He was a graduate of the first ever graduating class of Lakeview High School in 1955 and went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy. He owned and operated the Quaker State Station in Stoneboro for a number of years, worked as a service manager for Slater Ford, worked at Moore Industries in Fredonia, and retired from Laubscher Cheese as a delivery man. He married his beloved wife, Shirley Proud, on May 5, 1957, she survives at home. Vern enjoyed golfing, and was especially proud of his two hole in ones. He also enjoyed NASCAR Racing, having attended many Daytona 500 races. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He enjoyed going to horse races, the winter bowling league and spending his mornings with the Coffee Bunch at Dyes Service Station. Vern was a member of Lake Lodge #434 F&AM in Sandy Lake and a member of the Zem Zem Temple Shrine in Erie, as well as the Mercer County Shrine Club & Wheel Patrol. Vern was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, Vern is survived by his daughters, Jane Miles and husband Tim of Grove City, Kathleen Oakes and husband Dale of Mercer, grandchildren April Novick and husband Michael of Sharpsville, Meghan Miles of Conneaut Lake, Leah Oakes and husband Ian Mundy of Pittsburgh, and Katelyn Miles of Grove City, great grandchildren Bronson, Weston, and Taylin Novick, brother Fred “Fritz” Hedglin and wife Dorothy, sisters-in-law Judy Poole and husband Bob, and Betty Fischer and husband Art, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Vern was preceded in death by his brother Gary Hedglin. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Black Funeral Home of STONEBORO, 99 Franklin Street, where family and friends are welcome from 2 – 5 pm on Sunday, January 6, a Masonic Funeral Service will follow visitation at 5 pm. Additional visitation will be from 10 – 11 am on Monday, January 7. A funeral service will follow at 11 am in the funeral home with the Reverend Randy Ritchey, Pastor of Oak Grove Church, Officiating. The V.E.T.S. Honor Guard will follow rendering full Military Honors. A private interment will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery.
