Lawrence A. Smith

Lawrence A. (Sonny) Smith, 81, of Meadville died Friday, August 12, 2016 at Park Avenue Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was born in Meadville November 29, 1934 a son of Albert and Josephine Helen Kurt Smith. He married Geraldine Louise Miller October 6, 1956 and she preceded him in death May 16, 2008. He was a graduate of Meadville High School and the Crawford County Vo-Tech in Auto Body. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the US Marine Corps obtaining rank of Sargent. He worked on the railroad for over 40 years starting with the Erie Railroad and retiring from Conrail. He also continued to help over the years on the family farm. He was a life-long member of St. Hippolyte Roman Catholic Church where he was also a volunteer. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, camping, woodworking and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his companion Rosemary Oehmler of Guys Mills; five children, Kathleen Karns and her husband Larry of Meadville, Diane Courtney-Voss and her husband Steve of Meadville, Lawrence Timothy Smith and his wife Becky of Meadville, Jennifer Dustin and her husband Bill of Meadville and John A. Smith of Conneaut Lake; five sisters, Joan McCain, Rita Derby, Audene Ehrgott, Kay Hotchkiss and Wanda Schmidt all of Meadville; nine grandchildren, Nathan Karns and his companion Samantha, Alex Karns, Ashley Karns and her fiance Tim, Matthew Courtney, Renee Courtney, Lawrence T. Smith, Jr., Nolan Smith and his fiance Sidney, Jacob Bowman and Zachary Smith; three great grandchildren, Addison Karns, Mason Karns and Isabella McIntyre and nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, MaryAnn McCarl and two brothers, Russell G. Smith and Duane L. Smith. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville with a Scripture Prayer service at 7:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Hippolyte Roman Catholic Church, 25997 State Hwy 27, Guys Mills, PA with Fr. Daniel Prez, celebrant. Interment with military honors provided by Huidekoper VFW Post #2006 will be in Smith Cemetery.
