Leland J. Culbertson

July 26, 1887 — February 6, 1956

Leland J. Culbertson, prominent local attorney and social and civic worker died last night at City Hospital where he had been a patient since January 1st.

Besides his long career in the legal profession, which began in Meadville in 1915, he had served as a labor arbitrator and was appointed to the American Arbitration Assn., and had been associated with several social and civic organizations.

He was a past president of the Crawford County Bar Assn., a member of the Governor's Committee for Relief in Pennsylvania and past president of the Pennsylvania Conference on Probation and Parole.

Besides his active career in the legal profession and many other civic functions, Mr. Culbertson had a long military career which spanned two world wars.  In World War I, he served with the US Navy and in World War II, he served with the US Army and was commanding officer of many ordnance work programs.

Mr. Culbertson was born in Meadville, July 26, 1887, a son of James L. and Elizabeth Edmeston Culbertson.

He attended Meadville High School, Allegheny College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy, NY.  He was a member of the Unitarian Church; Crawford Lodge 234, Free and Accepted Masons; and the Scottish Rite Bodies at Coudersport.

Survivors include his widow, the former Miriam G. Shyrock and a son, John, both of Meadville.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
