Leo C. Geiger

October 16, 1913 — April 16, 2009

Leo C. Geiger, 95, formerly of Erie, Golfview Manor, Meadville, and Juniper Village, Meadville, died Thursday, April 16, 2009 at the Crawford County Care Center.

He was born October 16, 1913 in Erie, a son of the late Joseph and Catherine Smith Geiger.  He married Dorothy Rose Moore June 23, 1936 and she preceded him in death February 16, 1991.

Leo was a 1932 graduate of Erie Academy High School and was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.  He was a P.O.W. in Germany.  He worked as a Prudential Insurance Agent in Erie for many years and subsequently worked for Canteen in Erie for many years.  Leo was a member of Meadville Elks Lodge 219, Meadville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 and was a former member of the Erie Maennerchor Club, East Erie Turners Club, and the Knights of Columbus, Erie.  He formerly enjoyed bowling, doing crossword puzzles, golfing, and reading cowboy and detective novels.

Leo was a member of St. Bernadette’s Roman Catholic Church, Saegertown and was a former member of St. George’s Church, Erie.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Ruth Metzler and her husband Gary of Saegertown and Kathy A. Hunt and her husband Rodney of Erie; 2 sons, Leo E. Geiger and his wife Shirley of Yorktown, VA and Donald J. Geiger and his wife Pat of Montgomery, TX; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles John Geiger, infant daughter, Mary Lee Geiger, a grandchild, and 7 brothers and sisters.

Calling hours will be today (Saturday) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Bernadette’s Church, Renner Ave., Saegertown where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Ray Gramata as Celebrant.

Interment with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery, Erie.

Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.
