Leon H. Berkey, 92, of Meadville died Monday, November 16, 2015 at White Cliff Nursing Home, Greenville.
He was born March 29, 1923 in Elton, PA a son of Harvey and Anna Grace Reitz Berkey. He married Marian E. Roberts January 20, 1949 and she preceded him in death June 16, 2006.
He was a graduate of Adams Twp. (Cambria County) High School and was a veteran of World War II serving with the US Army in the Pacific. He was a gunnery mechanic servicing B-24 bombers and served on the Morotai, Guadalcanal and Philippine Islands.
After the war he returned to the Johnstown area and attended the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He worked as a glazier with the Glaziers Local #751, Pittsburgh of the Architectural Metal and Glass Workers Union and retired in 1988 having worked as the senior glazier on the PPG Corporate headquarters building project in Pittsburgh. He was a hard-working man, always active and farmed on the side during his working career and continued in his retirement raising Simmental cattle. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas Berkey and his wife Ann of St. Augustine, FL and Lloyd Berkey and his wife Robin of Meadville; a family friend, who was like a son to him, Jim Walter of Bethel Park; four grandchildren, William Berkey, Adam Berkey, Catherine Berkey and Cassandra Berkey and four great grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua, Jeremiah and Elise.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Wright, Ruth Brumbaugh, Ada Stambaugh and Lois Berkey and four brothers, Paul Berkey, Jacob Berkey, Robert Berkey and Alva Berkey.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.
The funeral service will be Thursday at 12 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Rebecca Patterson, Pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, officiating and military honors provided by Huidekoper VFW Post #2006.
Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
The family suggests memorials be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
