Leon Russell Maitland

September 20, 1908 — March 23, 1998

Leon Russell Maitland, 89, a former Meadville resident and a resident of Spring Hill Senior Living Community of Erie since 1994, died Monday, March 23, 1998 at Forest View Skilled Nursing Center of Erie after a period of failing health.

He was born September 20, 1908 in Rowston, OH, a son of the late Willis V. and Laura Schaefer Russell, and was adopted by his great Uncle and Aunt, John and Ida Mailliard of Kinzua.  He married Florence Farrell July 1, 1937.  She survives.

Mr. Maitland retired in 1973 at Chief Project Engineer at Talon after 39 years of service.  He was a graduate of the Warren, PA public schools and a 1931 graduate of Allegheny College where he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity.  He was a charter member of the NW PA Chapter of American Society of Metals, and helped compose and edit the society's handbook.  He served as Chairman of the West Mead Township Sewer Authority for 10 years.  He served as a secretary of the first West Mead Township Zoning Commission.  He served two terms as Township Auditor.  He was a member of Crawford Masonic Lodge #234, the Scottish Rite Bodies of Erie, Zem Zem Shrine Temple of Erie, Crawford County Shrine Club and Elks Lodge #219.  He also enjoyed caring for birds, gardening, golf, camping and playing bridge.

He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daughter, Judith M. Green of Erie; two grandsons, Adam Michael Green (Jill) and Noah Russell Green (Helene), both with the US Navy in Virginia Beach, VA; and three great-grandchildren, Katherine Farrell Green, Jordan Charles Green and Samantha Jo Green.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
