Lewis S. Brown

November 7, 1873 — February 19, 1967

Lewis S. Brown, 93, who claimed to be the first health officer in Crawford County, died suddenly Sunday, February 19, 1967, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. D. D. Van Marter of Saegertown, where he resided for the past two years.

Mr. Brown served as health officer in the mid 1930s.  He also served as jury commissioner for one term in the early part of his life.

A native of Frenchtown, Mr. Brown was born November 7, 1873, a son of Joseph and Julia Mair Brown, and married Orpha A. Walton in 1897.  She died in 1951.

Mr. Brown was a blacksmith in the Blooming Valley area until 1911.  More recently he farmed and raised Holstein cattle in Woodcock Township.  He was a member of the Vernon Grange.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. D. D. (Laura) Van Marter of Saegertown, Mrs. Carl (Helen) Brown of Black Ash and Mrs. Fredric (Hilda) Cotton of Titusville; a son, Edward L. of Woodcock; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery.
