Lloyd E. Akins

Lloyd E. Akins, 84, of Meadville, died at home surrounded by his family, Thursday, June 23, 2011.

He was born April 23, 1927 in Ashtabula, OH a son of Homer Charles and Anne Lantz Akins.  He married Betty L. Boyd July 5, 1951 and she survives.

He first worked at Master Chrome Service Inc. in Cleveland, then came to Meadville and worked for Powell Sanitation for 20 years and then at the former Mead Nursing Home for 17 years.  In his retirement he worked at the Meadville Airport and the Gable Hill Driving Range.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in Germany with the US Army.  He enjoyed stamp collecting, model airplanes and his work.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, Betty of 59 years, include: three children, Lloyd Akins Jr. of Conneaut Lake; Joann Battaglia and her husband John of Meadville and Jerry Akins and his wife Betty of Guys Mills; seven grandchildren, Tammy, Michael, Jason, Justin, Brenda, Joseph and Bethany; ten great grandchildren, Taylor, Cody, Makayle, Trevor-John, Delilah, Myiesha, Kaylee, Jeremiah, Steve and Christina; two sisters, Carrie Sullivan of Clairton, OH and Ida Burton of Meadville; a brother, Hank Akins of Waterloo, IA; close family friend, John Zinnamosca of Conneaut Lake and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Akins; a twin brother, Floyd Akins and a sister, Florence Butterfield.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.

The funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor June Hostetler of Crossroads Mission Church, officiating.

Interment with military honors provided by Harm Jan Huidekoper VFW Post #2006 will be in Venango Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of Crawford County, 464 Pine Street, Meadville, PA 16335.
