Lois Slater

Lois H. Slater, 93 of Avalon Springs, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, June 9, 2023.

Born in Clarion on June 5, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Vercel McNaughton and Melven Day Haines.

On November 29, 1974, Lois married James H. Slater.

A graduate of Clarion Limestone High School, Lois worked at McKean’s Shurfine as a Cashier. In earlier years, she worked for her brother at Haines Superette. Lois was also a member of Clarks Mills Church, and New Vernon Grange. Mrs. Slater is a former 8-year resident of Hempfield Senior Apartments, and previously resided in Clarks Mills for 43 years. Lois was also an avid gardener and quilter in her spare time.

Lois is fondly remembered for her cooking, and never letting guests leave hungry. She hosted holidays and dinners almost every Sunday. A devoted mother and grandmother, Lois’s greatest joys were watching and taking care of her children. Those who knew Lois recall her being the “town’s Grandma”, for taking care of and cooking for them over the years. She is dearly missed.

Surviving are Lois’s four daughters, Debbie (Bruce) Yeager of Clarks Mills, Karen S. Philson of Greenville, Sandy Stewart of Clarks Mills, and Tina (Jim) Graham of Stoneboro; grandchildren, Mike (Tracy) Van Tassel, Teri (Ron) Wagler, Chad (Megan) & Brent (Bridgette) Philson, Christopher (Shannon) & Joseph (Hannah) Saeler; great-grandchildren, Tori (Dalton) Marsteller, Kasi (Austin) Shawgo, Damian & Kody Van Tassel, Cecil, Aaron, Canyon, Cera, Chason, & Cheyenne Philson, and Mason, Brice, Braden, Alaina, Rowan, & Grayson Saeler; great-great-grandchildren, Ryan Walton, Sawyer Shawgo, Rowan Philson, and two great-great-granddaughters on the way; sister, Phyllis Hoobler; and brother, Blaine Haines.

Preceding Lois in death are her parents; husband, James H. Slater; grandson, Jimmy Saeler; great-grandson, Chandler Philson; first husband, Robert J. Drayer; brother, Blair Haines; and sister, Evelyn Fagley.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Rose & Black Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 99 Franklin Street, Stoneboro, PA 16153, where visitation will be held from 3-6 PM on Wednesday, June 14. A service will take place at the funeral home on Thursday, June 15, at 11 AM, with life-long family friend Larry Yeager as celebrant. Private interment will take place at Clarion Cemetery.

Family requests that memorial contributions be made in Lois’s name to the Clarks Mills Community Church, 3813 Hadley Rd, Clarks Mills, PA 16114.
