Miss Louise Hempstead, 98, of Winter Park, FL, formerly of Meadville, died at Winter Park on Tuesday, January 11, 1977.
She was born in Meadville, May 18, 1878, a daughter of Ernest A. and Annie M. Warner Hempstead. She was a graduate of Meadville public schools and from 1896 to 1898 attended Allegheny College where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She received a bachelor of science degree in 1900 from Cornell University where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Chi, honorary society. She received a master of arts degree in 1903 from Columbia University. Miss Hempstead taught school for many years at Mount Vernon Seminary in the District of Columbia. In her later years, she did genealogical research, tracking her ancestry back to when the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620. She lived in Meadville from 1930 to 1943. She was a member of Meadville Unitarian Church.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, including Miss Louise Furrer of Cleveland Heights, OH, Dr. Marguerite Kingsbury of Coreys, NY, Ernest H. Kinsgbury of Danielson, CT, Prof. Robert F. Kinsgbury of Lewiston, ME and Mrs. Mary K. Hume of Toledo, OH.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
