Lynn L. Barnes

Lynn L. Barnes, 73, of Meadville, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at Meadville Medical Center.

Born in Meadville February 19, 1927, he was a son of Edward Franklin and Millicent Palmer Barnes.  He married Mary Lou Womer May 22, 1948.  She survives.

A graduate of Meadville High School and Crawford County Area Vo-Tech School, he served in World War II as a mechanics instructor at Fort Benning, GA.  He began a 56-year career as an auto mechanic by working for his father, who founded Barnes Auto Service on Pine Street in 1936.  He was owner-operator of the business from 1948 to 1988.  Upon the sale of the establishment, he worked as a mechanic for Reimanns Marine Service of Conneaut Lake, John Rugala Motors of Meadville and R.H. Watkins Service, Market and Pine Streets of Meadville.

He was noted for his strict standards of workmanship, but also for a humor that could lend itself to the situation at hand.  In the hospital bed in recent months, he worked by telephone to advise Watkins mechanics on the repair of carburetors.

He was a member of Stone United Methodist Church, where he served as a longtime usher; a 38-year member of the Meadville Kiwanis Club; a member of the Meadville Management Assoc. a 53-year member of Meadville Rescue Squad; a lifetime member of Crawford County Volunteer Firemans Assoc.; a member and past president of the Crawford County Tourist Assoc.; a member of Go-4-Fun Camping Group; and a former member of the Meadville Jaycees.

He took great interest in the business affairs of Meadville and Crawford County, and enjoyed traveling, particularly to Europe.

In addition to his wife of 52 years, survivors include a son, Clark Barnes of North Olmstead, OH; a brother, Neil Barnes of Ormond Beach, FL; a niece; a nephew; and several cousins.

Services were held at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home and Stone United Methodist Church.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
