M. Calvin Kost

M. Calvin Kost, 91, of Meadville, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Meadville Medical Center following a short illness.

He was born September 7, 1907 in Smoke Run, a son of the late Alexander and Julia Kost.  He married Catharine Stolz February 1, 1940.  She survives.

He was a 1925 graduate of Madiera High School, Clearfield County.  He attended Lock Haven, Elizabethtown and Millerstown State Teachers Colleges.  He received his BA degree in Education from Penn State University in 1937.  In 1944, he did graduate work at Penn State towards his Masters Degree in Education.  He was a principal and 8th grade teacher at Neason Hill School, a 4-room schoolhouse, from 1937 to 1939.  He was the principal of West Mead Consolidated School from 1939 to 1945.  He started the first school cafeteria in Crawford County. During World War II, he worked at the Keystone Ordinance Works as a personal investigator.  He worked as the circulation manager at the Meadville Tribune from 1945 to 1972.  He subsequently worked as a stockbroker from 1974 to 1989.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ; the Meadville Lions Club for 54 years, including terms as director, president, zone chairman and deputy district governor, Penn State University Alumni Assn., Meadville Bridge Club; and Greenville Bridge Club.

His hobbies and special interests included being an avid bridge player; golfing; fishing; Penn State football; wintering in Florida following his retirement; owning a 1914 Model T Ford and riding in it in local parades; attending the Wesbury United Methodist Community adult day care for the past four years and especially spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of 59 years, include three sons, Peter Kost (Judy) of Meadville, Frank Kost (Anne) of Schenactady, NY and Eric Kost (Jeri) of Perrysburg, OH; eleven grandchildren, Michael Kost, Susan Kost, Karen Kost, Matthew Kost, Jocelyn Kost, Lindsay Kost, Kevin Kost, April Weber, Julie Barnes, Rebecca Kost and Eric Kost; three step-grandchildren, Lisa, Justin and Christopher Villani; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Wesley, Frank and Andrew Kost and two sisters, Mary Belis and Anne Roepke.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
