Margaret L. Barr

Margaret L. Barr, 95, formerly of 498 Hartz Ave., Meadville and a current resident of Hickory House Nursing Home, Honeybrook, PA, died there Thursday, November 20, 2003.

She was born August 12, 1908 in Troy Township, a daughter of the late Judson Lee and Cora Helena Ferringer Blanchard.  She married Stanley A. Barr July 20, 1935 and he died April 19, 1998.

She attended Allegheny College and graduated from the former Edinboro State Normal School in 1931.  She worked as a schoolteacher for 35 years, teaching in Troy, Woodcock, Hayfield, and Vernon Townships and also the Meadville Schools, retiring in 1970.  She was a member and past worthy matron of the former Mead Chapter #445, Order of Eastern Star; member of the worthy matrons club; member of the Meadville Medical Center Auxiliary; member and past president of the former Vernon Township P.T.A; member and past president of the Republican Women’s Club; and member and past Chaplain and Parliamentarian of the Colonel Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1920, former church Deacon, Elder, Sunday School teacher and was formerly an active member of the church’s Faith Circle.

Survivors include a son, Stanley A. Barr, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of West Chester; 3 grandchildren, Stanley A. Barr, III, Douglas J. Barr, and Amy Shaffer; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Emma Smith and Helen Marie Blanchard and a brother, Dr. D.C. Blanchard.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville with an Eastern Star service at 7:00 p.m. and Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty St., Meadville.  The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Brian Jensen, Pastor officiating.

Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery.
