Margaret Ruth Smith, 79, of 219 Allegheny St., Meadville died Thursday June 2, 2005, at Meadville Medical Center.

She was born in Youngstown, Ohio, July 19, 1925, a daughter of Melvin Ray & Ed

Margaret Ruth Smith, 79, of 219 Allegheny St., Meadville died Thursday June 2, 2005, at Meadville Medical Center.

She was born in Youngstown, Ohio, July 19, 1925, a daughter of Melvin Ray & Edna Mae Bowlin Crislip, and had been raised by her aunts in the Meadville area under the name of Margaret Ruth Bowlin.  She was first married to Gerald “Jerry” Yoest in 1941, and subsequently married Paul J. Smith July 24, 1968, and he survives.

She had attended Meadville High School and Brooklyn Commercial College, and had been employed at several area businesses as a bookkeeper, the last being for Humphrey’s Master Cleaners.

She was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, had served as a Gray Lady during World War II, while living in New York City, was well known for her fine motor skills having crocheted many mittens and lap robes, and in 1988 made the official bi-centennial sampler which received the Grand Champion recognition at that years Crawford County Fair.  She was also a member of the Christlieb-Chrislip-Crislip Family Association over the past twenty years.

She especially loved her pet dog, Dakota and cat, Friday.

Survivors in addition to her husband of 36 years include 2 daughters, Carolyn Turnbull and her husband James of Meadville, and Joyce Minnis and her husband Richard of Conneaut Lake, 2 stepdaughters, Margaret Robinson and her husband Robbie of Niles, OH, and Patricia Shunk and her husband Gary of Hartville, Ohio, 1 step-son, William P. Smith and his wife Mary of Brookfield, Ohio, 3 grandchildren, Richard Minnis, Jr. and his wife Shelly of Woodlands, Texas, Aubrey Minnis and her husband Dominick DiRienzo of Meadville, and James D. Turnbull of Meadville, 3 step-granddaughters, Jennifer Zachary, Andrea and Paula Smith, 5 great grandchildren, Alexander, Joshua, Grace, McKenna, and Luca, 2 step-great grandchildren, Hunter and Gavin; 1 half- brother, Melvin Ray Crislip, Jr., of Johnstown, PA and 1 niece, Beverly Crislip of Mars, PA..

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Yoest, an infant son Gerald William Yoest, Jr. a brother, James W. Crislip, and a half sister, Betty Crislip.

Calling hours will be today (Friday) from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.

The funeral service will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Timothy M. Solomon, pastor of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, officiating.

Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.

Memorials my be made to the Crawford County Humane Society 11012 Kennedy Hill Road, Meadville, PA 16335, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
