Marie E. Kaufman, 97, a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community since March 1993, died there Saturday, February 28, 2009.
She was born May 7, 1911 in Corry, a daughter of the late Martin and Minnie Madison.
She attended school in Corry and played on the girls’ basketball team. She was very proud of the fact that they won the tournament in 1928. In September 1930, she moved to Meadville with her family where she worked at the G.C. Murphy Co. and the Crawford Store. She retired in 1976 from Montgomery Wards, following 20 years of service.
She was a member of the Meadville YWCA and enjoyed numerous trips with the gallivanters group and the Anderson Tours group. Her hobbies included making crafts, ceramics, crocheting, making needlepoint, and sewing.
Marie was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Survivors include a son, Richard Miller and his wife Diane of Wilmington, DE; three daughters, Dr. Jane Banks and her husband Charles of Coltsneck, NJ, Diane Miller of Fort Mill, SC, and Rita Kay Thomas of Aurora, CO; a brother, Wilbur Madison of Meadville; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Purvis; a brother, Walter Madison; and a son-in-law, Michael Thomas.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.
A funeral and committal service will be Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Jack Spencer, United Methodist Clergyman officiating.
Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.
