Marilyn H. (Holmes) Shilling

March 17, 1932 — July 11, 2017

Marilyn H. Shilling, 85, formerly of 1238 Carmont Dr., Meadville, passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at Wesbury United Methodist Community.

She was born March 17, 1932 in Meadville, a daughter of James and Frances B. Derfus Holmes, Sr.  She married John R. (Jack) Shilling April 14, 1951 and he preceded her in death April 27, 2006.

Marilyn was a 1950 graduate of Meadville High School.  She was employed as a secretary and bookkeeper with Eaton & Shilling Masonry and subsequently Shilling Masonry Contractors.  She previously worked for Channellock, Dr. Ferer, J.C. Penney Company, and Warehouse Electric.

Marilyn was a member of St. Paul’s Reformed Church.  She was a former member of the Meadville Country Club, enjoyed golfing and bowling, and was an avid reader and Cleveland Indians fan.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Hornstein and her husband Donald of Conneaut Lake and Kathy Beard and her husband David of Sharpsburg, MD; a son, Dale Shilling and his wife Kim of Meadville; six grandchildren, Alan and Ryan Hornstein, Corie and Marty McElroy, and Ashley and Eric Shilling; six great-grandchildren; three brothers-in-law, Richard Shilling and his wife Mary of Crossville, TN, Dan Shilling and his wife Sharon of Conneaut Lake, and Ron Shilling and his wife Jeanie of Charlotte, NC; a cousin, Richard Vatter and his wife Jane of Cincinnati, OH; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Holmes, Jr.

A private family graveside service will be at Greendale Cemetery with the Rev. Sam Marchetta, Chaplain of Wesbury United Methodist Community, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Meadville Public Library, 848 N. Main St., Meadville, PA 16335.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation for the loving care Marilyn received from the Wesbury staff throughout her time as a Wesbury resident.
