Mark Cassius Hills

October 4, 1864 — January 1, 1753

Mark Cassius Hills, 79, of Meadville, died December 7, at Greenville Hospital where he had been a patient since Thursday night.  Death was attributed to a heart condition.

Mr. Hills, well-known in Meadville through his association with the Crawford County courthouse, which he served as custodian for the past ten years, was born in Crawford County, and his marriage to Lydia Blackmer took place there about 61 years ago. .

After his wife's death in May 1916, Mr. Hills and several of his children, moved to Greenville, where he engaged in blacksmith work at a shop on Clinton Street near Water, in the same location in which his son, Chester Hills, now operates.

Ten years ago, he returned to Meadville and took up his duties at the courthouse, there becoming a familiar figure to many Meadville residents.  A member of the New Richmond Lodge IOOF, since 1892, Mr. Hills was honored in November, 1942, by the organization, at a testimonial meeting held to commerorate his 50 year membership.

A member of the Baptist Church, Mr. Hills was baptized in French Creek as a youth, and later became affiliated with the Greenville Baptist Church during his residence there.

In May 1943, Mr. Hills resigned from his duties in Meadville and returned to Greenville to reside with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Hills.

Greenville member of his family include Chester Hills, Mrs. Earl Hickey, Mrs. Harold F. Landfried and Mrs. Chase Groce.  Other children are Charles Hills of Dansville, NY, Sherman Hills of Townville, Marshall Hills of Meadville, Lawrence Hills of Springboro and Mrs. Boyd Stanford of Cambridge Springs.  A daughter, Mrs. Sara Hunt of Greenville, preceded him in death five years ago.  There are sixteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Also surviving is a brother, Thomas Hills of Meadville.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Lyona Cemetery.
