Martha M. Brydon, 86, formerly of 562 Cole Dr., Meadville, passed away Sunday, October 7, 2012 at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community surrounded by her loving family.
She was born April 8, 1926 in Buffalo, NY, a daughter of William Philip and Jessie Van Geem McGovern. She married Robert B. Brydon June 16, 1951 at Wayne Park Baptist Church and he preceded her in death March 14, 2005.
Raised in Erie, Martha was a 1944 graduate of Academy High School. In 1944 and 1945, she took classes at Penn State Extension, Erie in engineering drafting, completing enough required hours to be qualified as a draftswoman.
She formerly worked for 10 years at Burke Electric Co., Erie, later known as Marathon Electric in the cost accounting department. After moving to Meadville in 1954, she became a stay at home mother for 18 years. She was a former part time secretary at the First Baptist Church. She retired from Greenleaf Corp. accounting department in 1989, following 16 years of service.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, upholstering, caning chairs, and gardening.
A member of First Baptist Church, Meadville, she served as Missions treasurer for 10 years. She served as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent of the primary department for many years. Martha also served as a member of the advisory board, Christian education board, American Baptist Women Missionary Society and its Mission Action Circle. She was a member of the church choir for over 40 years.
Martha was a former treasurer of the Church Women United, Meadville for 5 years and a former member of the Meadville Women’s Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy E. Wilkinson and her husband Jack of Meadville; a son James K. Brydon and his wife Lisa of Crofton, MD; four grandchildren, Ryan Wilkinson and his wife Jennifer, Nathan Wilkinson and his wife Julie, Garrett Wilkinson and his wife Samantha, and Emily Brydon; three great-grandchildren, Reese, Riley, and Shawn Wilkinson; two sisters, Alice Butt of Utah and Mary Frances Filson of Meadville; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Teresa McGovern.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.
The funeral service will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Kent Haines, Pastor of Cochranton Community Church, officiating.
Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.
