Mary E. Leffingwell

July 23, 1894 — January 20, 1977

Former Crawford County Fire Control radio operator, Mrs. Mary E. Leffingwell, 82, of Saegertown, died Thursday, January 20, 1977, at Mead Nursing Home where she had been a patient for one month.  She had been in ill health for two years.

Born in England July 23, 1894, she was a daughter of James and Annie Irlam.  She was first married to L. J. Leffingwell who died in 1972.  She operated Mary's Superette at the corner of North Main Street and Gasteiger Road for 20 years before selling the business and retiring in 1973.  She also was the first fire control radio operator for West Mead 2 Volunteer Fire Department and then the radio dispatcher for Crawford County Fire Control until it was headquartered in Crawford County Courthouse.  She was an honorary member of West Mead @ VFD and French Creek Valley Grange.  She also was a member of Christ Church Episcopal.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Mary) Rundell of Saegertown and Mrs. Kenneth (Grace) Lloyd of Meadville; four sons, Alfred Irlam of Venango; Carl Crannell of Meadville, Arthur J. Crannell of Meadville and Malcolm Crannell of Saegertown; a brother, William Irlam of Meadville; seventeen grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
