Mary H. Johnson

November 14, 1897 — August 24, 1980

Miss Mary H. Johnson, 82,  a resident of the United Methodist Home and Nursing Hospital, formerly of New Castle, died Sunday, August 24, 1980, at the United Methodist Home and Nursing Hospital.

She was born in Sioux City, Iowa, November 14, 1897, daughter of Nels P. and Alice Rowe Johnson.

She received a BA degree in 1922 from Morningside College of Sioux City and did graduate work at Drew University of Pittsburgh.  She had taught school in Iowa, South Dakota, Pennsylvania and Maryland and had served as cottage supervisor at the Methodist Home for Children in Buffalo.

From 1925 to 1930, she served as a missionary in Hinghwa, China.  From 1934 to 1939 she served as field secretary for the Philadelphia branch of the Women's Foreign Missionary Society.

From 1939 to 1946, having been ordained a Methodist minister, she served as pastor of Wurtemburg United Methodist Church near Ellwood City.  She was last a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, New Castle.

She was past president of Business and Professional Women's Club of Missouri Valley, Iowa.  She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Missouri Valley.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Jacob (Edith) Muller of Butler and Mrs. Jorge (Geraldine) Sarmiento of Lima, Peru; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Wurtemburg Cemetery.
