Mary R. Philson Gustafson

Mary Rose Philson Gustafson, 78 of Jackson Center, passed away on the morning of February 5, 2018 at St. Paul Homes in Greenville. Mary was born in Fairview Township, Mercer County, on August 16, 1939 to the late John Alban and Margaret Nancy Kitch Philson. Mary was a 1957 graduate of Lakeview High School and then started working for Bell Telephone Company in Mercer and Meadville as a long distance operator, retiring in 1980. She was then employed in 1982 by Adessa Auto Auction as a notary. Mary married her beloved husband, William Leroy “Bill” Gustafson on May 19, 1975, he survives. Mary was an opinionated woman who would let you know how she felt. She loved to grow flowers and ride horses. She was a life member of the Bell Telephone Pioneers, a national organization. She also loved Elvis and was enjoying his music into her last days. Her nieces and nephews were her world and enjoyed spending time with them. She loved her swimming pool and taught all her nieces and nephews to swim, if they could make it across the pool they would get a prize. Mary is survived by three step-sons, Thomas, Randall, and Timothy Gustafson and their families, one sister, Nancy Walters of Delano, PA, and one brother Scott Philson and wife Peggy of Fredonia, PA. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, who she was very close with. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her sisters Dolores Linn and Norma Philson, and her brothers Robert “Bob”, David “Dave”, John “Jack”, and James “Jim” Philson. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin Street, Stoneboro, where family and friends are welcome from 10 am until 12 pm on Wednesday, February 7, 2018. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home at 12 pm with her dear nieces officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
