Mary T. (Dottie) Rice

Mary T. (Dottie) Rice, 99, formerly of Maple Lane, Meadville, and a resident of Laurel Maryland since 1999 died Saturday, December 20, 2008 at Capital Hospice in Arlington, VA.

She was born in Bakerstown, April 19, 1909, a daughter of George W. and Margaret Sweeney Montgomery.  She married Kenneth W. Rice, January 20, 1950, and he preceded her in death January 22, 1962.

Dottie was a 1927 graduate of Tarentum High School, and a 1929 graduate of Slippery Rock State Teacher’s College, with a 2 year associate degree in education.  She taught at the Russelton Junior High School (Allegheny Co.) for 19 years, mostly in music and history, and subsequently served for 5 years as principal there.

As a resident of Meadville, Dottie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Meadville Country Club, and a 20 year volunteer at Wesbury United Methodist Community.

She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia R. Chase and her husband Phillip of Laurel, MD; one step-daughter, Barbara Moline and her husband Ronald of Chicago, IL; two granddaughters, Margaret Chase Rice of Laurel, MD and Rebecca Chase Fowler of College Park, MD; two great grandsons and two nieces, Margaret (Peg) Richardson of Worcester, MA and Lynne Hawkes of Sarasota, FL.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Edna Swartz, and two brothers, Clifford and John Montgomery.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery.
