Meredith Y. Shortt

Meredith Y. Shortt, 91, of 844 Dogwood Drive, Wesbury United Methodist Community, Meadville, PA died Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at her home.

Born on May 5, 1920 in Pittsburgh, she was a daughter of George B. Young and Ivah P. Young.  She was graduated from Warren (PA) High School in 1938, then from Warren Conservatory of Music in 1940, followed by further private piano study under various teachers.  She taught piano and played as a voice and violin accompanist until her marriage to her high school classmate Charles B. Shortt in 1944.

After marriage, she and her husband lived in Northampton, MA and Erie, PA until 1956, when they returned to Warren, PA, residing on Buchanan Street until 1999, when they moved to Meadville.

In Warren she had continued to pursue her lifelong love of music by further piano studies.  She also was  member of the Philomel Club, and sang in the choir of the First United Methodist Church of Warren, where she was a longtime member.  Mrs. Shortt was a voracious reader of books.  (She died reading a book, sitting in her favorite chair.)

Surviving, in addition to her husband Charles, of 67 years are her son David, currently living in Sweden and a sister, Grace Strand of Lakeland, FL.

She was preceded in death by her son John in 2004 and by a sister, Gladys Anderson of Tampa, FL in 1999.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in the chapel of Wesbury United Methodist Community, 31 N. Park Avenue, Meadville.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Pleasantview, PA.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.
