Mildred Elaine Karns (Tootin Tillie), 86, of Meadville passed away Sunday, July 17, 2016 at Wesbury United Methodist Community where she had briefly resided. She was formerly of Pettis Road and resided at Sugar Creek Station, Franklin for 8 years where she was loved by many and made great friends. The family appreciated the loving care provided by their staff. She was born June 18, 1930 in Meadville, a daughter of the late Harry and Lorretta Heyer Callahan. She married Ellis Lawrence Karns May 17, 1952 and he preceded her in death January 15, 1961. Mildred attended St. Brigid Catholic School in Meadville. She was a homemaker for many years raising her five children on her own and with the help from many family members. She subsequently worked at Westinghouse, Mead Nursing Home, and at Brooks Hall, Allegheny College from where she retired, made many friends, and was one of the highlights of her life. Mildred was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, Pettis and Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Cochranton. She enjoyed working at the annual St. Hippolyte ham and chicken dinners and in her younger years was involved with the East Mead VFD ladies auxiliary. Her greatest love was spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends. Survivors include five children, Joan E. Karns of Meadville, Larry Karns and his wife Kathy of Meadville, Teresa Bell-Hornyak and her husband Jim of Cochranton, Darlene Hunter and her husband Todd of Cochranton, and Marlene Pratt and her husband Randy of Meadville; eleven grandchildren, Abby Karns, Nathan Karns and his companion Samantha, Alex Karns, Ashley Karns and her fianc Tim McIntyre, Michelle Bell-Gross and her husband Irvin, William Bell, Tessa Wellmon and her husband Chad, Heidi Bohlender and her husband Andrew, Ryan Crago and his wife Danielle, Bryan Crago, and Emily Pratt; six great-grandchildren, Addison and Mason Karns, Isabella McIntyre, Blake Wellmon, and Colten and Avallyn Crago; two sisters, Edna Ferry of Conneaut Lake and Audrey Dinsmore of Meadville; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Nellie Callahan, Jim and Marceen Karns, Gladys Karns, Earl Karns, Jerry and Mary Ann Karns, and Rita Bogardus; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Jennings and Ann Kightlinger; and two brothers, James and Harry Callahan. Calling hours are today (Tuesday) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville with a scripture prayer service at 8:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, 251 S. Franklin St., Cochranton with Fr. Daniel Prez as Celebrant. Interment will be in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Pettis.
