Mildred Emma Smith Bowen, 94, of Providence Place, Chambersburg died April 18, 2007 at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born on the Britton Pettis Road Farm, Meadville May 23, 1912, she was the daughter of Oscar Davison and Hattie Britton Smith. She attended a one room school house grades one through eight and graduated from Meadville High School in 1932. She married Jack Ryals Pruer Bowen October 16, 1939. He preceded her in death December 4, 1968.
A US Army veteran of World War II, she achieved the rank of Captain and served as Medical Department Dietician in the continental US and Pacific Theater. She graduated from Penn State University in 1936 with a B.S. degree in Institutional Administration, Hospital Dietetics. She was a member of the Women’s varsity rifle team all four years at Penn State. Professionally, at St. Vincent Charity Hospital in Cleveland, she was on the faculty of the School of Nursing. Later she worked at University Hosptial as a Clinical Dietician in both the Medical and Outpatient Clinics. Later she worked with the famous endocrinologist, Dr. Robert Greenblatt at the Medical College of Georgia. She holds life membership in the American Dietetic Association and is a member of the DAR.
Survivors, include: one daughter, Martha Macfarland of Waynesboro; one son, Peter Bowen of Redmond, WA and three grandchildren, Francis and Charles Bowen of Carmel, IN and Stacey Bowen of Redmond, WA.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Marion Smith and Marjorie Smith.
Calling hours will be Saturday from 1-2 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Aaron Kerr, Pastor of Stone United Methodist Church, officiating.
Burial with military honors provided by VFW Post 2006 will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Randolph Twp., Crawford Co., PA.
